How much colorant for my lawn: the calculation by area

Allow 1 litre of concentrate for 400 m² of lawn that is still green, and 1 litre for 200 m² of badly burnt or dormant lawn or hedge. Measure the area to be treated, choose the coverage that matches the state of the grass, then the format that covers it. Below 50 m², ready-to-use saves you diluting.
The calculation in three steps
- Measure the area to be treated, not the whole garden. For a rectangle: length × width. For an irregular shape: split it into rectangles and add them up. For a round area: 3.14 × radius × radius. Take out beds, paths and the patio. Three methods, online tools included, are set out in our article on how to measure your lawn area.
- Check the state of the lawn. Still green or just uneven: 400 m² per litre of concentrate, at a 1:50 dilution. Very yellow, burnt, bleached or dormant: 200 m² per litre, at a 1:30 dilution. For moderately damaged turf, diluted at 1:40, calculate with 200 m² per litre if you are unsure: you will not run short.
- Divide the area by the coverage to get the number of litres of concentrate, then choose the format: 500 mL, 1 L or 5 L Pro. Ready-to-use is counted directly by area, about 10 m² for the 750 mL spray and about 50 m² for the 5 L container.
There are two coverage figures because turf that is still green only needs evening out, whereas very yellow or bleached grass needs more pigment to be corrected, and therefore a more concentrated mix. The same area then uses twice as much concentrate.
Quantities for common areas
The table comes from our calculation tool, with the prices including VAT on the product pages as of 4 November 2026 and bottles bought whole. The cost per m² drops if the rest of a bottle is later used for touch-ups.
| Area | State of the lawn | Format | Price incl. VAT | Cost per m² incl. VAT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 m², or more than 100 urine spots | Any state (coverage on the product page) | 1 × 750 mL ready-to-use spray | €32.99 | €3.30 |
| 50 m² | Any state (coverage on the product page) | 1 × 5 L ready-to-use container | €49.99 | €1.00 |
| 100 m² | Badly burnt | 1 × 500 mL concentrate | €69.99 | €0.70 |
| 200 m² | Still green | 1 × 500 mL concentrate | €69.99 | €0.35 |
| 200 m² | Badly burnt | 1 × 1 L concentrate | €89.99 | €0.45 |
| 400 m² | Still green | 1 × 1 L concentrate | €89.99 | €0.22 |
| 400 m² | Badly burnt | 2 × 1 L concentrate | €179.98 | €0.45 |
| 800 m² | Still green | 2 × 1 L concentrate | €179.98 | €0.22 |
| 1,000 m² | Badly burnt | 1 × 5 L Pro concentrate | €359.99 | €0.36 |
| 1,500 m² | Still green | 1 × 5 L Pro concentrate | €359.99 | €0.24 |
| 2,000 m² | Still green | 1 × 5 L Pro concentrate | €359.99 | €0.18 |
Beyond about 50 m², concentrate works out much cheaper per m² than ready-to-use. For 1,000 m² of badly burnt lawn, the 5 L Pro costs less than five 1 L bottles (€449.95, that is €0.45 per m²). Delivery is free from the 1 L in France. To compare these costs with overseeding or turfing, see our article lawn paint: what it costs per m².
Two family lawn examples
A 500 m² lawn that is still green needs 1.25 L of concentrate. Two 1 L bottles cover it for €179.98, that is €0.36 per m², with some left over for touch-ups. One 1 L bottle and one 500 mL bottle cover up to 600 m² of healthy lawn, for €159.98 in total.
The same lawn, badly burnt after the summer, needs 2.5 L of concentrate. Three 1 L bottles cost €269.97, that is €0.54 per m². Two 1 L bottles and one 500 mL bottle cover exactly the 500 m², for €249.97. The 5 L Pro (€359.99, that is €0.72 per m² for this area alone) only becomes worthwhile if you plan a second application or other areas.
Hedges and thujas
For a hedge, count the area of foliage: length × (2 × height + thickness) if you treat both faces and the top, at a coverage of 200 m² per litre of concentrate. A hedge 20 m long, 1.80 m high and 60 cm thick represents 84 m², that is one 500 mL concentrate (€69.99, €0.83 per m²). A hedge 30 m long, 2 m high and 80 cm thick represents 144 m², that is one 1 L concentrate (€89.99, €0.62 per m²). Shade, dilution and step-by-step: our guide hedge paint for thujas.
How much mix you will spray
A 1:30 dilution means one volume of concentrate for about 30 volumes of water. One litre of concentrate therefore gives about 31 L of mix at 1:30, and about 51 L at 1:50; a 500 mL bottle gives about 15.5 L at 1:30. With a 2 L sprayer, that is around fifteen fills for one litre of concentrate at 1:30, and about 25 fills at 1:50. Only prepare what you will use during the day: a diluted mix does not keep for several weeks in the sprayer. Choosing equipment and the dose of concentrate per fill are covered in our article which sprayer for a lawn colorant.
Allow some margin
Some situations use more than the basic calculation. An area that stayed too light is gone over again with a second light pass once dry. An area treated on its own needs its edges feathered by spraying lightly all around, to avoid a visible line. Finally, local touch-ups a few weeks later keep a lawn even without retreating everything. The rest of a bottle keeps closed, away from frost, heat and direct sunlight, and is used within the year after opening, after shaking the container well.
What quantity does not change
Putting on more product does not make the grass any more alive. The colorant recolours existing blades: it does not feed the lawn and does not fill in a bare area. A mix more concentrated than 1:30 mainly risks giving a green that is too dark. Where the grass is dead, reseeding or overseeding remains the solution, and on a lawn the colour goes with the mowing over 2 to 3 months.
Frequently asked questions
How many m² does one litre of concentrated colorant cover?
Up to 400 m² on healthy or still green turf, diluted at 1:50, and 200 m² on badly burnt or dormant turf or on a hedge, diluted at 1:30. The 5 L Pro concentrate thus covers from 1,000 to 2,000 m² depending on the condition of the surface.
How much colorant for a 100 m² lawn?
A quarter of a litre of concentrate if the lawn is still green, half a litre if it is badly burnt. In both cases, the 500 mL concentrate is enough, for €69.99. The 5 L ready-to-use container covers about 50 m²: you would need two.
Ready-to-use or concentrate: which should I choose?
Ready-to-use needs no dilution, for spots, edges and small areas; it comes to around €1 per m² in the 5 L container. Concentrate requires a dilution step, but comes to about €0.20 to €0.30 per m² for a household, depending on the format and the state of the lawn.
Is the 5 L Pro only for professionals?
No, it is on sale in the shop for everyone, with free delivery. It suits large properties and areas of 1,000 m² and more. For regular volumes, landscapers, golf courses and local authorities can request a trade price.
What should I do with leftover colorant?
Close the container and store it away from frost, heat and direct sunlight. It is used within the year after opening: it will do for touch-ups or the next application, after a good shake.
For most family lawns, the 1 L Meadow Green concentrate covers up to 400 m² of healthy lawn, with free delivery in France. Beyond 1,000 m², the 5 L Pro concentrate lowers the cost per m². Send us the area and a photo by WhatsApp: we will confirm the format, shade and dilution.
